I Didn’t choose the rug life, The rug life chose me!
We’ve got an Autumn launch of ‘snug rugs’ that you can experience at our flagship store. Here are also some interesting facts, and some tips to get all the creativity flowing, for styling living spaces with rugs.
After all, our vision for a layout literally stands on its floor. It goes without saying, then, that floor coverings can really make or break the mood of the room.
Versatile joys of 100% New Zealand wool
If rugs can be a feast for the senses, then the sense of touch probably celebrates the most.
At The Pure Concept Home, rugs are known for pleasurable underfoot sensations and seating – the 100% New Zealand wool makes them lightweight, yet sumptuous, and warm; also comfortably breathable when it’s not that nippy.
A hand-tufted rug is a practical & durable investment
It’s true: the easiest way to differentiate between a hand-knotted and a hand-tufted rug is to simply flip it over.
As the name suggests, the underside topography of a hand-knotted rug will be a mix of even-uneven woven knots; whereas that of a hand-tufted rug will have an even-textured canvas.
In a tufted rug, inserting the pile – or woven fibre loops that define how thick and thin, ‘tall’ and ‘short’ the surface looks and feels – is a hand-guided process.
Pockets of these piles, or tufts, can also be secured on the underside canvas with coating. This helps increase the longevity of your rug, especially if your living spaces are subject to high foot traffic, or more wear and tear than other areas.
Sometimes the loops can be cut or sheared, and rugs can have a combination of loop and cut piles. The tufts, then, are what help create multidimensional visual appeal, enhanced further by colours and designs.
If your style is more eclectic, then rugs can be really fun to work with
Not everyone prefers wall-to-wall carpets. Mixing and matching rugs can help connect different sections of a room layout, and also give the feeling of some balance, and breathing space.
Figure where the room space and rug size agree with each other
A crucial starting point. Sometimes, the space is expansive, and the rug is too small. Or, it could be big enough, but also overpowering. Layering rugs of similar geometrical dimensions (rectangle with rectangle, or circle with elliptical), but of different sizes, can help neutralise this styling conundrum.
The right pattern play makes rugs all the more plush
And geometrics are extending their stay in the spotlight!
Our Levi rugs align curvilinear with angular details. Colour blocking with Autumn-friendly hues of chestnut and olive against the eternal classics – ivory white and black – gives Levi a smart, sleek look.
Gloda showcases a contemporary-abstract design in warm and fuzzy, feel-good shades of pine green, auburn, straw-beige, and coral-glow. Concentric circle patterns are reminiscent of childhood doodles in the sand – perhaps, an ideal match for those who savour the sweet melancholy of Autumn.
The Crispin rugs, in straw-beige, flamingo pink, and indigo are friendly and vibrant. A softly contoured design takes inspiration from Celtic Knot artwork, while the subtle texturing is a clever way to neutralise foot patterning.
Choose a richly detailed rug to offset neutral walls
Colour contrasts aren’t always shocking. They can also infuse a sense of distilled cleanliness and clarity – the end result can be quite remarkable. If you have earth palette colour stories for your walls, for instance, then the rug can be in a vivacious jewel tone. The juxtaposition makes the space feel like it will be more responsive to different moods, at different times of the day.
A tone-on-tone approach: limited only by imagination!
Choosing different pigment intensities of the same colour palette for rugs, sounds easy enough. Until it’s time to apply them against the ‘bigger picture,’ i.e the walls and furnishing. As such, we maintain that rugs and other home textiles can actually be the defining factors for the ‘bigger picture’ details.
Either way, tone-on-tone is a project that calls for time, patience, and looking at choices with a fresh pair of eyes (again, sometimes, quite literally!) over several days.
It’s worth it, though. Getting tone-on-tone styling right means the room can end up looking more spacious than it might actually be, with different levels of comfort and cosy waiting to be discovered wherever different tones dance with each other.
